What structured cabling actually is
Structured cabling is a standardised, organised approach to the physical network infrastructure of a building — the cabling, patch panels, racks, and connection points that everything else plugs into. The alternative, unfortunately common, is ad-hoc cabling: cables run point-to-point as needed, undocumented, unlabelled, and impossible to troubleshoot cleanly. The difference between the two becomes painfully obvious the first time something needs to be diagnosed or expanded.
Why it determines security-system performance
Modern security systems are network systems. IP cameras, access controllers, alarm panels, and monitoring links all ride on the same physical infrastructure. Modern infrastructure increasingly uses Power over Ethernet (PoE), where a single cable carries both data and power to devices like IP cameras and access readers. Done well, this simplifies installation and improves reliability — but it also means the cabling and network switches must be specified to handle the power load, another reason the foundation needs proper engineering rather than guesswork.
