Start with the jobs, not the catalogue

Before looking at any camera, list what your office footage actually needs to do. Typical office objectives are: identify anyone entering or leaving at the main door, have a general record of activity across the floor, watch sensitive points such as the server room, cash handling area or stock room, and cover external approaches and parking. Each of these is a different surveillance task, and each drives a different camera choice.

The critical concept is how much detail you need on the subject. A camera meant to identify a stranger's face for an investigation needs far more pixels on that face than a camera simply recording that "someone walked across the floor at 2pm." Specifying an identify-grade camera everywhere wastes money; specifying detect-grade cameras at your entrance leaves you with footage that shows a blurred figure and nothing usable.

Camera types and where they fit in an office

A few camera types cover almost all office needs. Fixed dome cameras are discreet and tamper-resistant, which suits lobbies, corridors and open floors. Bullet cameras are more visible and are often used as a deterrent at entrances and outdoors. Varifocal cameras let the lens be adjusted to frame a specific area precisely — useful at a doorway where you want a tight, identify-grade view. Turret cameras handle mixed lighting well. PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) cameras cover large open areas such as a car park but should supplement fixed cameras, never replace them, because a PTZ pointed one way misses everything else.

Resolution: enough, not maximum

Higher resolution is not automatically better. More megapixels mean more storage consumed and more network load, and beyond a point the extra detail is wasted if the camera is poorly placed. What matters is pixels on target: a well-positioned 2–4MP camera at a doorway can deliver a clearly identifiable face, while a 4K camera mounted too high and too far produces a crisp image of the top of everyone's head. Decide the detail each position needs, then choose the lowest resolution that achieves it — that keeps storage and cost sensible.

The factors people forget: light and load-shedding

Two conditions decide whether office cameras actually work in Karachi. The first is lighting. Offices have bright windows, glare, and areas that are dark after hours. Cameras vary enormously in how they handle strong backlight (look for wide dynamic range) and low light. A camera facing a glass entrance can be blinded by daylight and useless at exactly the moment you need it, unless it is specified for that condition.

The second is power continuity. An office CCTV system that goes dark during load-shedding is not protecting you — outages are precisely when opportunistic incidents happen. Any serious office installation needs backup power sized to keep cameras and the recorder running through a typical outage, which is a design decision, not an afterthought.

Recording and retention

The cameras are only half the system; how footage is stored matters just as much. You need to decide how many days of footage to keep — often driven by how long it typically takes to notice an incident — and size the recorder and drives for that retention at your chosen resolution. For offices, it is also worth considering where the recorder physically sits: a recorder stolen along with the laptops defeats the purpose, so it belongs in a secured location, and off-site or cloud backup of critical footage is worth weighing.

For most offices, yes. When CCTV is tied to access control, an entry event and its camera footage line up automatically, so reviewing "who opened the server room at 9:40pm" takes seconds instead of scrubbing hours of video.
